Any Complaints?

A few people have asked if we have any complaints so far. We do, but nothing major, and the big one isn't even California related.

  1. Our car is still in the shop. There was a problem with the RPMs while accelerating on the interstate, along with a few minor things we wanted fixed. We took the car in yesterday, they paid for a rental car for a day, and we picked up our car today. As soon as we got back on the interstate, she did almost exactly the same thing, so we took her right back. We're in a different rental car now, and get our car back tomorrow or Friday. The problem has been the time. The dealer is 35 minutes away from where we are staying. The service desk has us wait, while they diagnose it, and then shuttle us to Hertz for the rental. Hertz is under staffed and extremely slow. However, other than time, we've been really fortunate. The rentals have been nice and Hyundai is paying for them. We bought a warranty when we bought the car that is covering all expenses of this endeavor. Today alone would have cost us about $800, so that's good for us.
  2. Everyone out here seems to be a "hippie" in some fashion. It's not a joke when people say Californians like organic food. It's harder to find produce that isn't organic. Every menu boasts free-range chicken and grass-fed beef. It can't just be a Chicken Sandwich, it's a free-range Chicken sandwich. Nick is worried that he's going to have to be vegan and do yoga. Those are also extraordinarily popular here. We were at a Subway when a lady ordered a cheese and veggie sandwich. Nick wondered if they could even charge for that. Those are other people's choices, though, and not affecting us other than a laugh or two. The potentially problematic one, though, is the light pollution policy. They have very limited street lighting, so as to not disrupt the night sky. People want to see the stars and such. That seems dangerous when none of the parking lots are lit much. There are very few street lights in residential or commercial areas. Hopefully we get used to that, and it isn't a problem.
  3. The last complaint is really, really minor. I'm sure we'll get used to it, or get TIVO. The time difference in reference to T.V. is weird. A show on at 8 p.m. in the Midwest is on at 6 here. Maybe they replay them later, we haven't figured that out. But what used to be on at the end of our evenings is now on right after work or at dinner time. What is late night T.V. here? The SUPER late night T.V. of the Midwest??
  4. The weather. It's really cold here right now. Just ask any California native ;)
I'm getting a little worried that Nick is going to try to smuggle Lucy the Labradoodle out of this house when we move into our apartment. She has stolen his heart.
